John Abraham’s landmark Malayalam film Amma Ariyan (Report to Mother) will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival’s TIFF Classics programme, following the world premiere of its new 4K restoration at Cannes Classics earlier this year.
The 1986 film, Abraham’s final feature, will receive its North American premiere at TIFF. The selection gives the restored film a second major international festival showcase after its Cannes premiere.
The restoration was undertaken by the Film Heritage Foundation at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, in association with the Odessa Collective. With no surviving original camera negative, the restoration was built from one of only two known surviving 35mm prints preserved at the NFDC-National Film Archive of India. The first-generation print used for the restoration had scratches, emulsion damage and deteriorated sound, requiring extensive manual work.
Amma Ariyan follows Purushan as he travels across Kerala to inform a mother of the death of her son. Along the way, his journey becomes a collective portrait of a generation shaped by political struggle, student movements and ideological disillusionment. Abraham combines documentary and fiction, using non-professional performers and a fragmented, observational form.
The film was produced through the Odessa Collective, a community-based initiative associated with Abraham that sought to break from conventional film financing and distribution. Its production and exhibition model became an important part of the film’s legacy, with screenings organised outside conventional theatrical circuits.
The TIFF selection extends the restoration’s international life and brings one of Indian parallel cinema’s most distinctive works to a new audience in its restored form.
