Christopher Nolan will travel to Mumbai next month for the India premiere of The Odyssey, marking the first time one of the filmmaker’s features has premiered in the country.

According to Universal Pictures International, Nolan will attend the screening alongside cast members Matt Damon and Tom Holland. The premiere is scheduled at the PVR Icon IMAX at Phoenix Palladium in Mumbai ahead of the film’s worldwide release on July 17.

Adapted from Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey follows Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, on his decade-long journey home after the Trojan War. Nolan’s screenplay is reportedly influenced in part by Emily Wilson’s acclaimed translation of the text.

Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway playing Penelope and Tom Holland portraying Telemachus. The ensemble cast also includes Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton, Lupita Nyong’o, Joe Bernthal and Benny Safdie.

Shot entirely with IMAX cameras by cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, the 172-minute film is among the most anticipated releases of the year. Producer Emma Thomas is also expected to attend the Mumbai premiere.

Nolan last visited India in 2018 for an event organised by the Film Heritage Foundation that promoted the preservation of celluloid filmmaking.
