The India Habitat Centre (IHC) has launched the IHC 35mm Film Club in Delhi, a dedicated initiative aimed at preserving and sustaining the experience of watching cinema on celluloid.
The club held its inaugural screening on August 31, 2026, with Manoj Kumar’s Kranti (1981), presented in its original 35mm format.
The initiative comes at a time when 35mm projection infrastructure is steadily disappearing from Indian exhibition spaces, making regular access to film prints and analogue projection increasingly rare.
Rather than functioning as a one-off retrospective, the 35mm Film Club is conceived as a recurring platform for celluloid exhibition, potentially giving audiences continued access to films in the format in which they were originally produced and exhibited.
The launch also places the IHC within a broader effort to sustain India’s film exhibition and archival culture, where the preservation of physical prints, projection equipment and the skills required to screen them have become increasingly important as digital projection becomes the industry standard.
