Toronto International Film Festival has selected five projects with India and South Asia links for its inaugural International Financing & Project Market, which will run alongside TIFF: The Market in September.
The projects include Sher, directed by Indian-Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta, with Jeremy Irons attached.
The slate also features House of Kali, a Canada-India project directed by Vikram Dasgupta, and Dating After Marriage, another Canada-India project directed by Misha Ghose.
Pakistani filmmaker Seemab Gul is represented with Salt and Shame, a Canada-UK-Germany-Pakistan project. Indian filmmaker Simantini Chakraborty has also been selected with the documentary Impossible to Ignore.
The International Financing & Project Market is a new financing and co-production platform created as part of TIFF’s expanding industry programme. It is intended to connect projects in advanced development with international financiers, producers, sales agents and distribution partners.
The South Asia-linked selections span multiple production territories, reflecting the increasingly international financing structures through which independent films from the region are being developed.
For Indian and Pakistani filmmakers, the market offers an opportunity to present projects directly within an international financing environment, complementing the festival’s existing programming, labs and industry initiatives.
